Service Learning and/or Internship Opportunity

Internship (80+ hours total)
Description:
The student attends the monthly 1.5-hour host committee meetings and assists the conference host professionals in managing the activities of the FGCU service learning students associated with the conference. The student would also attend the conference (Jan 31 and Feb 1, 2014) to coordinate student participation in the event and to participate in the educational activities. The internship would be located at the offices of one or more of the conference host organizations on a scheduled rotation.

Service Learning (10-20 hours total)
Activities Description:
The student attends the monthly 1.5-hour host committee meetings and take responsibility for one task of the conference organize. The student would also attend the conference (Jan 31 and Feb 1) to handle their specific area of responsibility within the event and to participate in the educational activities. The service learning program would be located at the offices of one or more of the conference host organizations.

Tasks include:

  1. Promotion and marketing
    (outreach to local media, regional professionals, and statewide university students/faculty)
  2. Technical program development
    (researching national/regional experts on select topics & arranging their invitation/participation)
  3. Lunch with a professional
    (planning and implementing a conference event in which university students have lunch with a selected professional to discuss professional topics and career goals)
  4. Poster competition
    (planning and implementing a conference event in which student from across the state exhibit water-related research posters and compete for cash awards)
  5. Sponsor recruiting
    (identifying and communicating with regional/national companies, NGOs and agencies to solicit sponsorship participation in the conference)
  6. Registration
    (assist with attendee registration, financial tracking, communications, and sign-ins)
  7. Web page management
    (developing content for the conference web page at www.AWRA.caloosahatchee.org and Facebook)
  8. Field trip
    (planning and implementing group field trips included in the conference on Feb 1, 2014)
  9. Audio-visual equipment
    (planning and implementing the computer, projectors, and audio equipment used in the event)
  10. Program book
    (Design and production of the conference program book)
  11. Venue logistics
    (plan and coordinate venue logistics with Crowne Plaza At Bell Tower, including meeting room, meals, breaks, etc.)
  12. Housing
    (arranging the hotel discounts for professionals and logistics of student housing at the FGCU Vester Field Station near Bonita Beach)

Locations:
The monthly host committee meetings are typically held at Gulf Coast Town Center. The other service learning and internship activities would be located at one or more of the host committee member locations.
